Packaged plastic free. Lokta paper is made from the bark of the bush named Daphne Papyrus, which only grows at an altitude of 6500ft or above in the Himalayas. The bark is gently removed from the trees without damaging the root system, and harvested in rotation to allow the bark to regrow, making it a truly sustainable resource. Every single sheet of paper is handmade by a cupful of lokta pulp being added to the wooden/mesh frames. Amazing accuracy can be achieved by the skilled artisans, and a variety of thicknesses from just 5gsm are produced. Paper is the traditional material for 1st wedding anniversary gifts. Read our blog post about how our lokta paper products are made here. The metallic thread is used in Nepal for intricate sari weaving and embroidery. It imitates the opulence of what is known in many parts of the Indian subcontinent as zari: silver threads which are electroplated with gold, then used in the weaving and embroidery of sacred, symbolic and luxury fabrics.

Based in Kathmandu, the recycled paper factory we work with was established in 2001 as a small cottage industry by sisters Aruna and Muna. They are passionate about contributing towards environmental conservation and providing employment to the underprivileged, especially women. AURA QUE products are individually handcrafted and the unique story behind each AURA QUE product enhances its charm!
